Hey guys, today we are going to learn how to choose a perfect hook for the type of yarn you’re using. Choosing a hook is simple yet complicated at the same time; it’s like you’re hungry but don’t know what to eat. Many crocheters always choose their hook depending on their preferences. I often heard they like to crochet with their favorite hook, which can be 4mm or 4.5mm; it’s valid, isn’t it? But not all yarns can be crocheted by those hooks.
The right hook ensures smooth stitching, even tension, and an enjoyable crocheting experience. Let’s get into details. ><
- Check the labels on the yarn; sometimes they would recommend the hook perfect for your project. Most of them are good, but it can be better, right?
- See If the yarn is chunky, the bigger the hook, the better the outcome. Just think, if you are crocheting a bag or, say, a plushie from a chunky blanket yarn wouldn’t it be difficult for you to crochet from smaller hook.
- Wait! These rules are not applicable in plushies if you are using yarns which are smaller like acrylic, cotton or blends. Always remember to use the smaller hook than recommended cause it gives a fine detail on the pattern. Just look at these images, the left side shows the before and the right side shows the after using the smaller hook.

- The material of the hook also plays a huge role in your project, for instance,
Aluminum Hooks – Smooth and fast, great for most yarns.
Plastic Hooks – Lightweight and good for thick yarns.
Wooden/Bamboo Hooks – Warm to hold, best for slippery yarns like silk or cotton.
Steel Hooks – Tiny hooks for lace and thread project.
- Need a loose stitch? No problem, just use a big hook, or need a tight stitches? Use small hook. These are the basic techniques crocheters use to make their project stunning.
It’s always hard to take the first step, it requires courage, determination, motivation, inspiration, creativity and yeah money, a lot of money especially if you choose to crochet but once that is taken and crochet your first project it is the best feeling you could ever describe to anyone.
The feeling of crocheting with your newly bought yarns, the pain you feel around your fingers, neck are the proof of your hard work. The mission is to help you choose the hooks to make your project look amazing.
